Ginecóloga Mariana Piastri.

For International Contraception Day, we approached Gynecologist Mariana Piastri to find out her opinion about whether it is necessary to take breaks from taking birth control pills as a contraceptive method.

The Dr. mentions that it is not a problem if one prefers to consume contraceptive pills from an early age without taking any breaks. However, it must be taken into account that those pills that contain synthetic estrogens expose us to possible thrombosis at the beginning of consumption. That is why, when faced with a possible suspension of the pills, if the intention is to resume them later; We must consider that we are exposing ourselves to this risk again.

Furthermore, with the interruption of birth control pills it is expected that our body will undergo certain changes . Some of these changes may be: the skin becomes a little more oily, menstrual pain appears slightly, and the cycle changes, as does the duration of bleeding and its volume.

On the other hand, it is expected that when the pill is stopped we will be exposed to a greater risk of having double ovulation and twin pregnancy. For this reason, it is recommended that, after abandoning the pill, we take care of ourselves with a barrier method to prevent this from happening, since a twin pregnancy represents an increase in the risk of pregnancy.

Remember the importance of going to your trusted doctor to find out about the most appropriate contraceptive method for you.
